Thermoregulation: Channels that Are Cool to the Core
نویسندگان
چکیده
TRP channels are molecular sensors that endow animals with the ability to sense external temperatures. Recent studies have provided strong evidence that at least one TRP channel, TRPV1, is also essential for the maintenance of internal body temperature.

Pharmacological Blockade of TRPM8 Ion Channels Alters Cold and Cold Pain Responses in Mice
TRPM8 (Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin-8) is a cold- and menthol-gated ion channel necessary for the detection of cold temperatures in the mammalian peripheral nervous system. Functioning TRPM8 channels are required for behavioral responses to innocuous cool, noxious cold, injury-evoked cold hypersensitivity, cooling-mediated analgesia, and thermoregulation. Because of these various rol...
متن کاملYawning and thermoregulation.
We review a growing body of medical and physiological evidence indicating that yawning may be a thermoregulatory mechanism, providing compensatory cooling when other provisions fail to operate favorably. Conditions such as multiple sclerosis, migraine headaches, epilepsy, stress and anxiety, and schizophrenia have all be linked to thermoregulatory dysfunction and are often associated with insta...
متن کاملFitness effects of floral plasticity and thermoregulation in a thermally changing environment.
To better understand the evolution of phenotypic plasticity and thermoregulation and their potential value for ectotherms in the face of global warming, we conducted field experiments to measure their effects on fitness and their association with reproductive phenology in Plantago lanceolata in a thermally variable environment. We measured the reproductive timing and success of genotypes varyin...
متن کاملTransient Receptor Potential Ion Channels Control Thermoregulatory Behaviour in Reptiles
Biological functions are governed by thermodynamics, and animals regulate their body temperature to optimise cellular performance and to avoid harmful extremes. The capacity to sense environmental and internal temperatures is a prerequisite for the evolution of thermoregulation. However, the mechanisms that enable ectothermic vertebrates to sense heat remain unknown. The recently discovered the...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Novel Portable Cooling Device for Inducing Mild Hypothermia
Therapeutic hypothermia is rapidly becoming an integral part of post-resuscitative care for post-cardiac arrest patients, with cooling increasingly being initiated in the pre-hospital setting in order to improve patient outcome. However, commercially available devices are not sufficiently portable or do not provide enough cooling power. Additionally, despite the significant impact of thermoregu...
